Tuatara



Tuatara
The Tuatara is a type of reptile. They are the only reptile in its order of species.Tuatara have exesited for over 225 million years. Their closest relatives are dinosaurs.They can live up to 100 years of age.
Tuataras are different to Lizard because Tuatara have extra holes in their heads compared to Lizards. Tuatara don't have the same type of ribs as Lizards. Tuatara don't have external ear drums like lizards do.
Did you know that Tuatara aren't born with only two eyes like lizards are in fact they are born with three eyes and when they get older skin covers their eye and then they start to use that eye to sense if it is light or dark.
Tuatara are nocturnal reptile.Tuatara is the Moari word for spines on their back.Tuatara were originally found all around NZ but they are now only found in predator free areas.Tuatara are sit and wait animals which means that they will sit and wait till their prey walks past.
Tuatara eat wetas, crickets,insects,other lizards and strangely they eat baby Tuatara.Tuatara are very unique animals they have different habits to lizards.
Tuatara are endangered reptiles. When polonesian arrived in NZ they introduced rats which have been killing Tuatara.
